What have you enjoyed most about your career?

“I enjoy the variety. I started in non-profits as a Peace Corps volunteer, working with refugees on the Emergency Response Team with the International Rescue Committee. Then, I built a website and brand for the Smithsonian’s research in astrophysics. After that, I got my MBA at Cornell and started with Adobe.”

How did Carthage prepare you?

“I credit my breadth of skills fully to Carthage. The trifecta of graphic design, communication, and public relations has been huge for me. I loved putting all the skills I gained from those majors into practice when working at The Current, Carthage’s student newspaper. Working there, I also learned how to lead teams and make something we were all proud of.”

Why did you choose Carthage?

“At the time, a small liberal arts experience that was close to large metro areas was important to me. Plus, the Communication and Digital Media Department had everything I wanted to learn.”

What Carthage professors played a part in your success and how?

Professor Laura Huaracha’s deep caring nature and support were huge for me. Professor John Isham taught me how to think, write, and articulate an opinion. (I also took his Russian Cinema class, which I still have the book from.) Professor Leonard Schulze was a remarkable support at The Current. Professor Joseph Shields gave me the confidence to do marketing. Professor Stephen Udry supported my interests in living abroad and helped me clarify and articulate my desire to do so to myself — reassuring me that the Peace Corps was the right thing to do. Professor José Montoto helped me hone the skill of critique that I still use almost every day.”

Steve Janiak was a remarkable boss and mentor. He gave me big opportunities, like designing all of the media covers for the year, and helped me navigate early career choices like working at Jockey. I wouldn’t have the portfolio I do if it wasn’t for my early job in the Office of Marketing and Communications at Carthage, and his support was essential to that experience.”

What role have the values in Carthage's mission, "Seeking Truth, Building Strength, Inspiring Service — Together" played in your life?

“I seek truth in both my work and personal life. I’m deeply curious about how the world works and what drives people, and I love pursuing that knowledge. I think that knowledge in turn builds strength and conviction. I do a lot of side work in the arts — helping build marketing, social, websites, etc. for small arts non-profits. So while I work in tech, I’ve never lost that connection to the non-profit space and being of service to the things I care about. Finally, I approach all of my work with a people-first mindset. We will all do better if we take care of each other in the process. I like to build things up — ideas, people, etc. — not tear them down. I think that reflects in everything I do in life.”

What's your favorite Carthage memory?

“Days and nights at The Current were some of the best. We had such a fun group of people working really hard to make something we were proud of. The annual trips to collegiate media conventions were some of my greatest memories from Carthage.”

Tips for current Carthage students?

“College is kind of like a good brainstorm. Stay curious and do a ton of divergent thinking and exploration. Then, start to converge, hone a point of view, and invest in it. Also, network.”
